Start with structure, not a blank page

Many training systems require organizations to build their entire training structure from scratch. Salt House Pro includes built-in veterinary skill frameworks that clinics, certification providers, and training programs can use immediately.

Different organizations often describe the same ability in different ways—one program may require “venipuncture competency,” another “blood collection in small animals,” a clinic checklist may say “draw blood.” The framework creates a shared reference layer so those programs can connect without replacing how each defines its own requirements.

You get a practical starting point and a foundation for shared competency structure across the industry.

Structured skill and certification framework

Skills are the foundation

Salt House Pro is built around skills as the fundamental unit of competency—each skill represents a capability a veterinary professional can demonstrate in practice, from patient assessment and IV placement to anesthesia preparation and client communication.

The goal is not to replace existing certifications or training programs. The framework creates a shared reference layer so they can connect in meaningful ways.

What the framework includes

Standardized skills are canonical definitions maintained with input from practicing veterinarians, veterinary technicians, educators, and industry contributors. The framework evolves as new skills are added and definitions are refined.

Standardized skills

Clearly described abilities that can be evaluated and verified, with a shared vocabulary for veterinary training across certifications and clinics.

Hierarchical competencies

Skills can be grouped into larger competencies and domains (e.g. Small Animal Patient Assessment & Care). Complex capabilities break down into measurable sub-skills.

Domain certifications

Structured competency programs built on the framework appear in the certification directory and provide clear pathways for professional development.

Equivalency

Program-specific skills can be mapped to standardized skills when they represent the same competency. Sign-off in one program can be recognized elsewhere through the shared definition.

Custom skills welcome

Organizations can create custom skills, competencies, and internal certifications. These can exist alongside—and map to—standardized skills when appropriate.

Versioned and evolving

The framework is maintained by Salt House Pro with industry input. A growing library of skill templates gives clinics and providers a head start without starting from scratch.

Custom skill mapped to standardized competency

The same skill, many names

Equivalency lets different programs recognize when they are evaluating the same competency. A clinic might create a custom skill “Patient Intake Examination” and map it to the standardized competency “Small Animal Patient Assessment.” When the custom skill is completed, the mapped standardized competency is recognized too.

So if another certification also maps to that same standardized skill, a learner’s sign-off in one place can satisfy the requirement in another. Programs keep their own definitions while connecting to shared competencies.

How equivalency works

Program-specific skills map to standardized skills so sign-off in one place can be recognized across programs.

What this means in practice

The framework connects training programs, certifications, and clinical environments through shared competency definitions. Standardized skills can be signed off directly and become part of a portable professional record.

For clinics

Structured training programs without starting from scratch. Use the library of skill templates and build on industry-informed definitions.

For certification providers

Build certifications on shared competencies. Use standardized skills, custom skills, or a mix—and map to the framework for equivalency.

For veterinary professionals

A professional record that reflects real skills and competencies. Verified competencies can be recognized across certifications and employers.

For the industry

As more programs map to the framework, the relationships between competencies become clearer—certifications, clinics, and professionals connect through a common structure.

A clearer picture of professional competency

By connecting skills, competencies, and certifications through shared definitions, Salt House Pro creates the foundation for an industry-wide competency graph.

Certifications from different organizations can reference shared skills. Clinics can recognize competencies earned elsewhere. Veterinary professionals can carry verified skills into their professional profile.

Over time, training programs, certifications, and professional records connect through a common framework—helping the profession describe, track, and recognize competencies with greater clarity.
